The Leoncino variety is a rice of the Japonica subspecies, which was historically used in breeding for crossing with the Vialone variety. The result of this breeding work was the development of the well-known Italian rice variety Carnaroli in 1945.
According to archival records, the variety was characterized by high productivity and the presence of a golden ear. In terms of agronomy, the crop was recommended for cultivation on moist, compact, and rich soils. In modern publications, the variety is mentioned primarily in a historical context.
