The Marathon variety was bred through induced mutagenesis of the Maratelli variety. In international plant genetic resource registers, it is registered as an Oryza sativa L. rice variety.

In grain quality assessment handbooks, the Marathon rice is mentioned in the context of amylose content characteristics, where the indicator varies within the range of 72–90 in various analyses of viscosity and quality of the finished product.
