The plant forms a basal rosette of glaucous-green, deeply dissected and pubescent leaves. Stems are tall, rigid, and covered with bristles. Flowers have characteristic dark, almost black or dark-purple, spots at the base of the petals.

The variety is a perennial with a distinct summer dormancy stage, during which the above-ground part dies off after flowering is completed. The plant is frost-hardy, prefers sunny areas with well-drained soil, and tolerates stagnant moisture poorly.
