The plant forms a compact mound of leaf rosettes, reaching 10–20 cm in height, up to a maximum of 30 cm. The leaves are heart-shaped, have a wrinkled texture, and are dark green in color, situated on long fleshy petioles of a reddish or pinkish hue.

Small greenish-white flowers are gathered in upright spike-like inflorescences. The plant adapts well to conditions with diffused light, however, it is sensitive to low temperatures and excessive watering, requiring good drainage to prevent root rot.

Despite the presence of the word "pepper" in a number of English names, the plant belongs to the Piperaceae family, is not a vegetable crop, and is not edible.
