ActivePhalaris canariensis L. · Canary grass
10 August 2026
The plant forms upright and densely leafy bushes with smooth-type stems and wide, slightly rough leaves. The inflorescence is a highly compressed panicle having the shape of an ovoid or club-shaped false spike. The seeds have an elongated-elliptical shape, a shiny surface, and a yellowish color, while they are firmly held in the inflorescence and are not prone to shattering.
The variety is thermophilic; seed germination requires soil warming to 10 °C. In agricultural practice, the crop is used for the production of green mass or hay, including in mixtures with annual legumes. The variety is also used as a winter-killing cover crop with anti-erosion effects and is suitable for organic farming systems.
