The shrub is characterized by slow growth, reaching a height of 30–50 cm up to 1.5 m. The leaves are leathery, shiny, with a creamy-white or yellowish border; spring growth is often colored in reddish or bronze tones, gradually turning green.
The flowers are gathered in drooping racemose inflorescences; their color varies from white to pale pink. The flowering period occurs in the spring months, usually from March to May.
The plant prefers acidic, humus-rich, well-drained soils and sites in partial shade protected from direct midday sun and wind. It is characterized by winter hardiness, but is sensitive to late spring frosts.
