Progress No. 9 is a dwarf variety with a plant height of 40 to 80 cm, sometimes reaching 120 cm. The ripening period is 62–70 days. The variety is resistant to lodging and a number of diseases, including Fusarium wilt.

The plant forms dark green pods containing up to 10 large succulent seeds. The peas are intended for grain production and are suitable for fresh consumption, canning, and freezing.
