The variety was created by selection from populations of Kentucky bluegrass in the mid-20th century. It was intended for landscaping large areas where economical maintenance and low intensity of care were important conditions.

In comparative trials of the 1960s–70s, the variety was characterized by a specific autumn leaf color and susceptibility to leaf spot caused by Drechslera poae. When conducting isozyme analysis (peroxidase), the variety is identified by the presence of four characteristic marker bands.
