The Max series clones are hybrids of Populus nigra × Populus maximowiczii. They possess rapid growth and high productivity, which is why they are widely used in Germany on short rotation plantations for the production of woody biomass used for energy purposes. The potential use of their wood as structural material is also being considered.
The survival rate of the clones depends on specific varietal characteristics. Compared to more modern breeding developments, the Max series clones possess lower resistance to diseases, in particular to the poplar rust fungus. In professional trials, these clones often act as control samples.
In German forestry practice, the clones Max 1, Max 3 and Max 4 are officially included in the category of materials permitted for use for forest reproduction. In literature, when the name Max is mentioned, it most often refers specifically to the Max 1 clone.
