The Avikandi variety was bred by the French National Institute for Agricultural Research (INRA) in Avignon as part of the first phase of a breeding program launched in the 1960s. It was included in the list of breeding achievements in the 1990s and is intended for use in commercial horticulture.

The fruits of this variety are characterized by good flavor qualities. The variety belongs to the mid-late maturity group and, within the breeding program, was aimed at achieving high and regular yields, as well as self-fertility.
