The variety has Italian roots and was described in the fundamental work Pomona Italiana by Giorgio Gallesio. In 19th-century Italy, this variety was compared to the Greengage variety in terms of taste qualities.
The fruit is characterized by a large size, oval shape, and yellow color, sometimes with a reddish tint. The flesh of the fruit is yellow, tender, and sweet. The tree is of medium size.
The Catalana group of varieties includes various strains that were historically cultivated in different regions of Italy, including Tuscany. In modern industrial cultivation, the variety is not widely distributed.
