The Opal variety was obtained by crossing the varieties Oullins Green Gage and Early Favourite. The tree forms a neat pyramidal crown. The fruits are medium-sized and colored red-violet.
The variety belongs to the early group; fruit ripening occurs at the end of July. The plant is self-fertile and is characterized by high and reliable yield. The fruits have a universal purpose and are suitable for fresh consumption and processing.
To prevent biennial bearing and maintain fruit size, thinning on the tree is required. The variety possesses winter hardiness and increased resistance to diseases, in particular to canker, compared to the Victoria plum.
