The Early Crawford tree is vigorous and has an upright crown growth habit. The variety is characterized as medium-productive; irregular bearing and a tendency to overbear are frequently observed, which can result in small fruit size without thinning.
The fruits are large, with yellow flesh characterized by a fibrous texture. Issues with irregular fruit configuration occur, necessitating culling. At present, the variety is practically not used in commercial horticulture, being preserved primarily in amateur collections and botanical gardens.
The variety is of American origin and belongs to heirloom varieties. Historically, the fruits were used for both fresh consumption and processing: drying, canning, and making chutney.
