Santa Lucia forms have been historically grown in Italy and are propagated by seed, with trees repeating maternal traits almost completely. The white-fleshed form Bianca di Santa Lucia and the red-fleshed form Rossa di Santa Lucia are distinguished.
The main economic feature of Bianca di Santa Lucia is its high resistance, practically immunity, to peach leaf curl, which eliminates the need for chemical treatments. The fruits ripen in early or mid-September; they possess aromatic juicy flesh that does not separate from the pit.
The name Santa Lucia is also used to designate Prunus mahaleb (St. Lucie cherry), a popular rootstock for stone fruit crops; therefore, when purchasing seedlings, clarification of the biological object is required.
