The Sirio rootstock, formerly known as I.S.5/22, was bred as part of a University of Pisa program. It has low vigor, providing trees with a size approximately 40% smaller than those on the G.F.677 rootstock.
The plant is well-adapted to fertile and permeable soils and shows resistance to chlorosis in calcareous soils. Trees grafted onto it enter fruiting earlier and are characterized by high yield efficiency, larger fruit size, and better skin coloration.
The rootstock propagates well via in vitro methods, but has low rooting ability when using cuttings. In experimental conditions, low survival rates of planted trees have sometimes been noted.
