The variety Painted Lady belongs to the Knap Hill hybrid azalea group, which has a complex hybrid origin involving Rhododendron luteum. Classification confusion arises from the combining of rhododendrons and azaleas into a single genus Rhododendron, whereas the species Rhododendron molle is an independent biological species.

Plants of this variety have pink flower coloration and are intended for ornamental gardening. The variety withstands temperature drops to the range of -23 °C ... -26 °C.
