Red Lake
ActiveRibes L. · Currants
Stat Minnesota (US)
10 August 2026
The variety was obtained by backcrossing Ribes multiflorum with red currant varieties. The bush is vigorous, reaching 1.5–2 meters in height, and up to 3 meters in fertile soils. Shoots are thick, strong, and upright; a characteristic feature is partial peeling of the bark on the branches.
Berries weigh 0.7–0.9 g, are ruby-colored, shiny, and gathered in long, dense clusters. They have a sweet and sour taste and a thick skin, making them suitable for transport and long-term storage on the bush until September. The variety is versatile in use, suitable for fresh consumption and processing.
The plant has strong immunity to American powdery mildew and anthracnose, although in certain conditions, there may be variability in resistance to powdery mildew. Due to its vigor, it is used in commercial horticulture and landscape design, including the creation of hedges.
