Midsommarråg ("Midsummer rye") was historically sown around Midsummer. Its life cycle characteristic allowed the crops to be used for grazing or mowing in the first year, and to produce a grain harvest in the second year. This form is also known as "bush rye" due to its high tillering capacity.
The plant has a tall stem reaching 2–2.5 meters. Due to intensive tillering, a low seeding rate was required when sown in early summer. Currently, the variety is maintained as a genetic resource for the conservation of agricultural crop diversity.
