Rothenbrunner is classified as a green-forage rye originating from the Grisons region. Currently, the variety is practically not cultivated and is considered almost lost, being preserved primarily in gene banks.
The variety was valued for its capacity for early spring growth, which ensured an early harvest of green mass for livestock. At the same time, the variety is characterized by poor winter hardiness, which is why its cultivation became unpromising.
In scientific studies, the variety stands out for its high resistance to stem rust. Detailed morphometric data and grain quality indicators for this variety are not defined, as it was historically used as a specialized forage crop.
The variety is listed in the national registry — its seeds are authorized for sale in this country.
