The Verde variety is an annual or biennial herbaceous plant with a strong stem, prickly leaves with a characteristic white marbled pattern, and bright purple flower heads. Plant height varies from 60 to 200 cm depending on growing conditions.

The main focus of breeding for this variety is increasing the silymarin content used in the production of hepatoprotective drugs. The fruits and seeds of the variety are used to obtain medicinal oils and dietary supplements.
