The variety is a local landrace, also known by the names Congo, Blå kartoffel, Svartpotet, Blå Congo, and Svartpotatis. It is an heirloom variety, presumably originating in the 19th century, which was introduced to Finland from Sweden in the 1930s.
The tubers are oval-shaped and have a fairly smooth surface with medium-depth eyes. The dark blue skin color penetrates into the cork layer, and the flesh is colored a deep purple. Due to its specific characteristics, the variety is grown primarily as a specialty crop.
