The Teena variety possesses marked field resistance to late blight (Phytophthora infestans), due to which it is slowly affected by this disease. Resistance to potato virus Y (PVY) is also noted, caused by the presence of the extreme resistance gene Ry_sto.
The variety is used as a model specimen in scientific studies aimed at examining the genetics of resistance to pathogens and the physiological mechanisms responsible for the development of internal necrotic disorders, in particular, tuber flesh darkening.
