The Savanna variety belongs to the category of tannin-containing sorghum. Scientific research has examined grain processing methods, such as the use of sodium bicarbonate, to reduce the anti-nutritional effects of these compounds when the crop is included in poultry diets.

Savanna variety plants have been used as a grain crop and have also been studied for use as silage and forage. Certain variety trial reports noted plant susceptibility to some viral diseases, particularly mosaic virus.
