Merlo Nero variety forms a compact rosette 20–30 cm tall with numerous oval savoy-type leaves. The leaf color is intense, dark green, sometimes described as almost black.

The plant is mid-early with a maturity period of 30–40 to 40–50 days. The variety possesses high cold tolerance, the ability to overwinter in mild climates, and bolting resistance, while tolerating heat poorly.

The yield of the variety is 2.5–2.8 kg/m². The produce is suitable for fresh consumption, culinary processing, canning, and freezing.
