The Yuma variety belongs to the Savoy group, characterized by the presence of "puckered" and crinkled leaves. The plant is selectively intended for cultivation for young leaves used in salad mixes.

The variety possesses resistance to spinach downy mildew (Peronospora effusa), specifically to races 1–15, 17, 19 and 20.
