Variety description

10 August 2026

The variety Chief is late-maturing: it matures approximately one week later than such varieties as Auburn or Dixie. The plants are distinguished by their large size and deep dark green leaf color. The seeds of the variety are slightly smaller in size than those of the Dixie variety.

This variety possesses high seed germination energy and is considered one of the most winter-hardy crimson clover varieties. It exhibits more active growth during the cold period and is capable of natural reseeding due to the formation of hard-coated seeds.

The primary purpose of the variety is for use as a green manure crop to improve soil structure, nitrogen fixation, and organic matter accumulation. The variety can also be used in pasture mixtures.
