The Barfiola variety is tetraploid in ploidy type. The plant growth habit in the autumn of the sowing year is characterized as intermediate; the variety also possesses a high ability to flower without undergoing a vernalization stage.

The variety is used in grass mixtures, in particular, in combination with perennial ryegrass and white clover. Research involving the variety focuses on its productivity and longevity under dairy farming conditions, including organic farming systems.
