The variety is the first tetraploid red clover variety bred in Finland. The plant is used as a valuable forage crop for producing green fodder, hay, or haylage.

In agronomic studies, the behavior of the variety is described as intermediate between diploid and tetraploid types. The variety contains phytoestrogens, specifically isoflavones such as formononetin.

Seed production of the variety was historically considered difficult. Genetic studies have shown that when grown in other climatic conditions, Tepa retains its main characteristics, despite possible minor changes in flowering times.
