Berchtesgadener Vogel is a tall-growing winter soft wheat, reaching a height of about 1.5 meters. The variety is a genetically heterogeneous landrace whose sparse stand promotes the development of field weeds and increases biodiversity in the fields.
The yield of the variety is significantly lower than that of modern intensive varieties. It is officially approved for use as a conservation variety and is used in the production of niche regional products, including organic grain, spirits, and baking.
