The winter soft wheat variety Brigadier is a historical variety that, under modern conditions, is used primarily in scientific research as an object for studying resistance to pathogens. It was used in breeding programs as a parental line or a control sample for comparison.
The variety possessed resistance to yellow rust, conditioned by the Yr17 gene; however, this protection was overcome by a new race of the pathogen in 1996. At present, the variety is valuable for the genetic analysis of wheat disease evolution, rather than for mass agricultural production.
