Variety description

10 August 2026

A variety simply named "Castel" is not described in scientific sources as soft wheat. The name refers to a group of Italian durum wheat varieties: Castelporziano, Castelfusano, Casteldelmonte, and Castelnuovo. These varieties were obtained as a result of breeding work led by F. D'Amato and G. T. Scarascia-Mugnozza.

The main goal of developing this group was to improve the characteristics of old Italian varieties. In particular, the Castelporziano mutant possesses a gene that reduced plant height by 34% compared to the Cappelli variety, which significantly increased lodging resistance.
