Cologna 12 is an old Italian variety obtained in the early 20th century through selection from a local population. The plant is characterized by a tall stem, reaching about 136 cm, and has a white awned ear.
The variety is adapted for cultivation in lowland areas and on rich soils. During the period of its active cultivation in the first half of the 20th century in the Italian regions of Emilia, Venezia Giulia, Tuscany, and Piedmont, the variety demonstrated a yield of about 20 c/ha.
