The Athos variety was created in the early 1980s by the breeding group of the Cereal Institute in Greece. It was intended for commercial use and is often cited in scientific papers as one of the typical Greek varieties of its time.
In comparative studies, the variety is classified as late-flowering. During trials, it showed high yield indicators, being among the most productive samples. The variety was also used in scientific assessments of grain protein composition, including gliadins and high-molecular-weight glutenins.
