The variety is facultative (winter-spring) and medium-early. Its key morphological feature is a semi-dwarf growth type with a stem height of 70–80 cm, which ensures high resistance to lodging compared to traditional tall varieties.

The variety was obtained via radiation mutagenesis of the Cappelli line and crossing with Mexican wheat lines. It possesses resistance to many races of diseases and is considered a reference variety, having become the genetic basis for breeding many modern durum wheat varieties.
