The Piceno genotype is mentioned in scientific publications dedicated to the breeding and testing of Italian durum wheat varieties. It acts more often as a parental component in the creation of new lines and varieties than as an independent production object.

Within the framework of comparative studies, the variety underwent screening for susceptibility to Fusarium head blight. The use of Piceno in breeding crosses is aimed at improving agronomic traits and the quality of grain intended for pasta production.
