The Piattulidda variety, also known as Chiattulidda or Licatesa, is a local landrace common in the provinces of Agrigento and Caltanissetta. The plant reaches a height of 125 cm and has an erect stem with a glaucous waxy coating.
The fusiform-shaped spike has an average length of about 7 cm and is provided with barbed awns that are black at the base and yellowish-red at the tips. The amber, semi-vitreous, oval-shaped grain has a heart-shaped configuration in cross-section.
The maturation period of the variety is about 130 days. It is traditionally used for the production of pasta, couscous, and bulgur.
