The variety is considered one of the oldest; some sources link it to a subspecies of Triticum turgidum subsp. turanicum. The name comes from the Sicilian dialect and means "to pierce sacks," which is due to the pointed shape of the grain. In Sicily, the variety has been known since the beginning of the 19th century.

The plant is tall, reaching 150–180 cm, which allows it to suppress weeds. The variety possesses high drought tolerance and is adapted to organic farming and cultivation without chemical plant protection products. Yield is lower than that of modern commercial varieties.

The grain has an amber color. The flour has a yellowish hue due to the presence of carotenoids. The gluten is less elastic than that of modern varieties but is easier to digest. The produce is used for making bread, pasta, pizza, and baked goods.
