The Peñafiel variety was created within the breeding programs of the National Institute for Agricultural and Food Research and Technology of Spain (INIA). It was intended for use in the food industry, specifically for pasta production and semolina extraction.

In scientific research during the early 1990s, the variety was used in experiments studying genetic segregation and the influence of endosperm proteins, such as glutenins and gliadins, on gluten quality and the milling properties of the produce.
