The variety is an ancient local wheat variety (landrace) cultivated in Sicily since the beginning of the 19th century. In addition to the primary name Perciavisazzi, the variety is known by a number of synonyms, such as Perciasacchi, Farro Lungo, Gnolu, Farrone, and Settecentanni.

The name Perciasacchi means "bag-piercing," which is due to the pointed shape of the grain. The plant has a strong straw and is historically adapted to calcareous, not very rich soils. The variety is inferior to modern wheats in terms of yield.

The grain is valued for its high technological qualities, allowing it to be used for making bread, pizza, baked goods, and artisanal pasta. The crop is considered an important part of Sicily's agricultural heritage.
