The variety was bred by crossing Ambral and Duilio lines. In scientific literature, it is classified as an Italian durum wheat variety.

During studies, the variety showed tolerance to ozone exposure, exhibiting a low degree of visible damage. The variety was used in comparative trials of Italian durum wheat quality to evaluate suitability and obtain subsidies.

Like other durum wheat varieties, Portorico is intended for use in the food industry, particularly for the production of pasta and groats.
