The Chiarano variety is a subject of genetic research and pathogen resistance testing. It is known as a carrier of the Lr9 resistance gene and demonstrates a moderate reaction to yellow rust infection, characterized by a score of 30 under field conditions.

In scientific publications, the variety is considered as a model for studying physiological responses of plants to sulfur dioxide exposure, as well as drought and heat stress tolerance. The variety is associated with the breeding activities of the Dekalb Italiana research center.
