The Fuente Umbría variety is one of seven clones selected within the framework of the Spanish state program for the conservation of the Iberian elm, launched in 1986. The main direction of breeding was the control of graphiosis, caused by the fungus Ophiostoma novo-ulmi.
During multi-year trials in Guadalajara and Palencia, this clone demonstrated a high level of tolerance to the pathogen. The variety was registered as controlled forest reproductive material for use in forest plantings and landscaping.
As of March 11, 2026, the variety was removed from the National Catalogue of Base Materials of Spain. Concerns were previously expressed regarding the use of the clone due to its potential impact on the purity of the local gene pool, for which reason it is considered primarily in the context of the history of scientific research.
1 jurisdiction
Green indicates countries where the variety is listed in the national catalogue and its seeds are authorized for sale. Expired registrations are marked separately: the variety was previously admitted, but sale is no longer permitted.
The right is granted for a limited term: propagation of the variety requires a license from the rights holder.
