The Ukko variety was developed based on local Finnish landraces with the involvement of genetic material from the ICARDA collection and Soviet varieties. The main objective of the breeding was to achieve early maturity, allowing it to fit into the short growing season of northern latitudes.

The variety belongs to small-seeded types. The small seed size was chosen to facilitate post-harvest drying in a humid climate, as well as to simplify the operation of agricultural machinery. The variety matures approximately two weeks earlier than many Western European analogues.

During the breeding process, goals were set to increase resistance to diseases such as rust and chocolate spot. The primary purpose of the crop is its use as a source of vegetable protein for the needs of livestock farming.
