The variety is characterized by a reduced content of tannins, vicine, and convicine, which increases its suitability for feed and food purposes. In terms of flowering time, Melodie belongs to the later varieties compared to early-maturing forms.
The seeds of the variety demonstrate an antibiotic effect against the bean seed beetle Bruchus rufimanus, limiting the development of the pest larvae. The plant is often used in scientific programs as a standard genetic sample for studying interactions with pests, including the black bean aphid.
