The variety is native to the islands of the Dalmatian coast of Croatia. It is used primarily as a wine variety for production of blends or dessert wines of the prošek type, more rarely for manufacturing monovarietal wines. The harvest usually takes place in early September.
The plant belongs to dark-skinned varieties with thin, easily damaged skin. It prefers deep, fertile, and well-drained soils, and grows including in high-altitude vineyards at an altitude of up to 580 m above sea level.
The variety is characterized by low resistance to fungal diseases, such as mold and downy mildew. In favorable years, the variety is distinguished by a sufficiently high yield, however, it requires careful maintenance due to its fastidiousness.
