The variety is autochthonous to the island of Pag and its surroundings in Croatia. Genetic studies have confirmed the uniqueness of the variety and its distinction from other known grape varieties. In old documents and regional dialects, the name Debeljan was sometimes used descriptively to characterize the size of the berry or cluster.

This variety is classified as a wine grape and is traditionally used for the production of a white wine known as “Paška žutica”. Currently, Gegić is also used in blends, particularly in the creation of rosé sparkling wines.
