The variety is a product of crossing Pinot Gris and Teinturier varieties. The name of the variety translates as "covering red," which emphasizes its main characteristic: high content of coloring pigments in the berry juice.
The variety has a medium ripening period, and the berries have a pronounced waxy bloom. In modern viticulture, it is rarely used, more often as a blend component in small proportions for wine color correction.
For scientific purposes, the variety is used as genetic material in the study of anthocyanin biosynthesis and the composition of berry cuticular wax. In the professional environment, it is being replaced by more resistant new-generation teinturier varieties.
