The hybrid belongs to early maize varieties. Studies from the 1970s noted that it is characterized by relatively short cobs and weaker ear formation compared to other hybrids of that time.
The name BC 48-21 should be distinguished from the breeding line BC 4821 B, which is an independent hybrid registered later.
