Alternaria blight of oilseed rape

Brassica napus var. napus

A fungal disease of oilseed rape caused by Alternaria brassicae and Alternaria brassicicola species, affecting all aerial plant parts throughout the entire growing season.

The primary pathogens of Alternaria blight on oilseed rape are the fungi Alternaria brassicae, which mainly cause grey leaf spot, and Alternaria brassicicola, which induce dark leaf spot. A. alternata, A. raphani, A. tenuissima, and A. arborescens may also be found in crops.

On leaves, the disease manifests as round or angular spots with a distinct halo, with A. brassicae often forming spots with a zonal "target-like" pattern. On stems and pods, sunken ulcerative lesions form, which become covered with a velvety layer of sporulation under humid conditions. Severe infection of pods leads to their premature shattering, known as the "trident" effect, resulting in shriveled seeds or their complete absence.

Specific monogenic resistance genes to this disease in oilseed rape have not been described to date. Resistance is considered a quantitative trait evaluated under field conditions, and the use of molecular markers is of an auxiliary nature for assessing overall genetic polymorphism.
