Potato early blight

Solanum tuberosum L.

A fungal disease of potatoes caused by the pathogen Alternaria solani, characterized by the appearance of spots with concentric zoning on the leaves, as well as lesions on stems and tubers.

The primary causal agent of potato early blight is the imperfect fungus Alternaria solani Sorauer. The role of other Alternaria species isolated from infected plants is considered secondary. There is no clear international division into races, so isolates are classified by morphological traits or levels of aggressiveness.

Symptoms on the leaves appear during the budding stage as dark brown spots 10–35 mm in diameter with characteristic concentric zoning, which become covered with an olive-colored mold under high humidity conditions. Elongated dark spots form on the stems, while sunken areas with dry rot of the flesh appear on the tubers.

The genetics of resistance to Alternaria solani is not sufficiently understood, and breeding is conducted primarily based on quantitative traits. Unlike late blight, there are no generally accepted R-gene designations for resistance to this pathogen.
